‘Mad but Glad‘ is the name of an excellent BBC Documentary that examines the link between conditions like Tourette Syndrome, Schizophrenia, Parkinson’s Disease, Autism and artistic flair. The film follows Tourette’s sufferer and highly accomplished classical pianist and author, Nick van Bloss, on his quest to understand more about what drives creativity. In so doing he uncovers the centrality of brain chemistry, particularly with respect to the dynamics of the neurotransmitter dopamine, and gains further insight into his own condition.
Although not addressed specifically in this documentary, bipolar disorder is frequently associated with enhanced creativity, as explored in superb detail in Kay Redfield Jamison’s landmark publication, ‘Touched with Fire: Manic-depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament‘.
An excellent, thought-provoking and insightful contribution from the BBC that is well worth watching:
